THE CAVE CHURCH OF THE CROSS AND RESURRECTION

In the early 21st century, under the direction of the present bishop and abbot His Grace Bishop Yostos, work took place to construct a beautiful and exquisitely unique church completely hewn out of the mountain rock. This church is an example of modern masonry in its finest. This church is located on the plateau where the stair case leading to the cave of the blessed desert father St Antony, begins. Even the spectacular murals which decorate the walls of this hewn church are completely carved from the rock face. The church was consecrated by the Monastery’s abbot, His Grace Bishop Yostos, in August 2009.
